As the season has changed, we can vaguely remember those beautiful, warm days of summer. Now, we have entered into the cold, snowy days of winter. Just about everyone you encounter has a sense of dread inside of them toward this time of year. Many, if not everyone, enjoys the first three seasons of Spring, Summer and Fall. During this time, we schedule vacations, trips away with the family to different recreational sites, or sometimes just enjoy a quiet evening cooking out and appreciate family memories. But, there is one particular motivation that helps everyone survive the depressing season of winter; the grateful holiday of Christmas. No matter your age, gender or financial situation, everybody loves to receive gifts. This special season brings out the real kid in all of us.
From time to time, throughout our spiritual walk with God, we ask HIM for things in our life. Sometimes we ask for the salvation of a family member, other times we may desire a new job, while at other times, our prayers may revolve around a forwardness in our daily walk. Whatever the case may be, we, as Christians, understand the Bible teaches us… Matthew 7:7 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:” But, the true concern would render, do we sometimes exclude a gift or blessing from God, because it doesn’t look like we thought or maybe the person delivering the gift does not meet our expectations. Often times, we reflect upon a certain situation and say, it’s not what I expected…
Genesis through Revelation gives numerous examples of gifts that are strangely wrapped. The package, in all reality fails to match the gift. For example, Joseph’s life was wrapped very strangely to save an entire family. A young man who held favor in his father’s eye, Jacob, found himself betrayed and cast into a pit. From this point, Joseph was sold into slavery by his very own brothers. Taken to Potiphar’s house, where he fought an encounter with a seducing spirit. Thrown into prison and forgotten. Roughly 13 years passed from the betrayal, until finally, reuniting with his family. During many situations, Joseph’s life seemed destroyed and defeated, but it was all God’s perfect will. Genesis 45:5 “…for God did send me before you to preserve life.” One man was sent ahead all alone to withstand 13 years of frustration to bring forth the divine plan of God. The entire nation of Israel survived a famine through one man’s obedience. Throughout life was Joseph rejected, because he did not appear to be a package of deliverance. But, what others overlooked, God used as a perfect gift.
Are you rejecting prosperity, blessings, and gifts in your personal relationship with God all because it doesn’t match your expectations?!?
A young man and his father were the only two in the household, due to the death of the mother. The young man and his father had a great relationship. The son was in college, very smart, and pursuing a college degree. The young man, as any normal human-being would, had his eyes fixated on a graduation gift. This gift was a sports car; every young man's dream. His father was very wealthy. He was a successful business man. The son knew the sports car was an affordable gift that his father could very easily purchase. So the son would make mention of how he would love to have that car, to everyone who had contact with his father. The day of graduation came and after the ceremonies had concluded, the two returned back home. The father was in his office and caught a glimpse of his son passing by. The dad hollered out to the son to enter into the office. The boy came in and sat down across the table from his dad. The father impressed his happiness of the son's hard work and dedication in college. Congratulating him on the successful life and career decision made. The father then reached down and grabbed a nicely wrapped present and handed it across the table. The young man with excitement immediately opened the gift. Looking inside, the boy glanced at the gift, anger began to swell inside of him. The gift wasn't what he'd expected. Inside the box was a Bible and his hopes and dreams of the sports car had diminished. The young man shoved the box back across the table to his father and said, "I don't have time for this dad. I'm out of here."
The young man packed his clothes, venturing off and out of his dad's life forever. The boy had finished college with honors and used his father's name to access a job. His new found life had begun. The young man found a lady friend, they had married and had their first child. Life seemed to be going good. Now, with a healthy home, including a great job, the family decided to have another child. During the birth of this second child, something triggered inside this man and he began missing his own father. The young man contacted his father and gave him a total run down of his new life, including details of the marriage and two children of his own. The father and young man decided to play catch up and planned a trip together. But suddenly, a week before the reunion the father had a massive heart attack and died. The young man was crushed. He flew across country to his dad's estate. Once he entered into the house, the young man went into the office of his deceased daddy and sat down at his desk. Looking around, his eyes caught a glimpse of the same exact gift that was presented to him at graduation, sitting on the shelf across the room. The young man walks over and retrieves the gift, he sits down at the desk pushing back all the papers that still covered it. The young boy opens the gift and inside, like as before, is the Bible. The young man lifts the Bible out of the box and noticed inside is a book marker. As he opens the Bible there is a scripture underlined, Matthew 7:11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? As the young man read this, he broke. He took the Bible and clutched it to his chest and all of a sudden, there was something unusual fell out of the Bible. It was a key! The young man picked up the key and ran into the garage. Looking across the garage, he noticed at the very end, a car sitting at the end with a cover over it. As he intensely pulled off the cover, he quickly realized that it was the sports car that he had asked for years prior.
Sometimes we must realize the gifts that God has in store for us come through unexpected wrappings. Don't count out the blessings or gifts that God has for your life just because it doesn't look like you thought.
